My foolish idea always has been to rewatch Barry Lyndon only after researching all the used painting references. But maybe it’s the spring coming that has ruined that original plan.

I can imagine somebody who has seen the movie, and then finds references by surprise in the wild, so to speak. The idea is too interesting, so references needn’t be researched in advance.

Yet the movie is not conceptually shallow, for there is also the striking other side of it. The aesthetic is not coming empty; it wraps a bullet.
